Hopi Indian Tribe

Meet the Hopi Indians

The Hopi Indian Tribe first became known to many settlers in the year 1540. The word Hopi is a shortened name from what the Native Americans called themselves, Hopituh Shi-nu-mu. The name Hopi means peaceful, wise, and good. Hopi Indians have respect for all living things and are always to be at peace with these living things.

Location
The Hopi come from the Southwest and from a group of people known as the Pueblo. As you can see in the map to the right,
the Hopi Indians lived in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. Today the Hopi Reservation is only located in Northeast Arizona.

Major Figures
There are many major figures in the Hopi Tribe. One of them was Yukiuma. He was famous for standing up against the US Government. Their agents came to take away the Hopi children and place them in boarding schools. He was imprisoned at Alcatraz because of standing up.
Thomas Banyaca, David Monongye, Dan Eveherma, and Don C. Talayesva are all Hopi Traditionalists.

The Hopi Indians grew similar food to the Navajo Tribe. Corn and maize was the main food they grew. On the corn they grew, the Hopi had religious ceremonies. Even though they had over twenty
-four different kinds of corn, the blue and white ones were the main corn. They even grew beans, squash, melons, pumpkins, and fruit. Both the men and women had defined jobs. The men were farmers and they planted and harvested the crops. They also weaved cloths and preformed the religious ceremonies. The women owned the land and the house. They cooked for everyone and weaved the baskets. When a child was born, they were given a special blanket and a perfect ear of corn. On the twentith day, they took the child to a mesa cliff in the morning. They hold the child up, facing the sun. When the sun hits the baby, he/she is given a name.

Hopi Housing
The Hopi people lived in pueblos on the mesa tops. A mesa is a small isolated flat topped hill. The pueblos were made of mud and stone and are over several stories

high. Kivas are underground chambers in the pueblos. They were used for religious ceremonies and just to talk. In the center of the kiva, there was a firepit.

Where Are They Now?
Today the Hopi Reservation is only located in Northeast Arizona. They still love their old traditions, art, and land. Even though they are big on tradition, they love our modern American lifestyle. Their children go to schools, just like ours, and they use medical centers. The Hopi people live and work outside of their own reservation.
